Shopping Canadian is easy at MasterBedroom in Whitby.

Offering Canadian-made furniture is a point of pride for owner Garry MacMurry, who notes Ontario experiences dry winters and humid summers, and local manufacturers build their products for the climate.

“If you don’t support the local economy, you’re not supporting Canadian,” he says. “Supporting local business is creating jobs for your children, grandchildren and even your neighbours.”

Our Products

The store, locally owned for 35 years, carries high-end hardwood, birch and heritage pine products from Canadian manufacturers that include the Oshawa-based College Woodwork. Those looking to outfit their bedrooms will find a variety of styles and finishes of beds, furniture, suites and mattresses in various price points, including popular adjustable beds favoured by those who like to watch TV or work on laptops.

Pine bunk beds and futons made in Ontario are also popular choices with customers.

Beds

Sturdy, solid metal beds from Quebec manufacturer Amisco come in a variety of colours and finishes. “These beds have heavy three-and-a-half-inch rails supported by the head and foot,” says Mr. MacMurry. They are sturdy beds, not on floppy rollers, and the rails can be adjusted upward or downward to create platform beds.

Pine and metal platform beds offer customers an attractive look without the extra expense of a box spring or a bed skirt. If a bed has good rails and a good platform system, it can make a room look more open and airy, says Mr. MacMurry, who can suggest options and choices to customers looking to make the most out of their bedroom space.

“They offer such versatility; you have the option of using a box spring or not,” he says, adding there are three different settings for the rails.

Canadian manufacturers also offer customers under-bed storage options for those needing extra drawer space, which can be especially appealing for anyone downsizing their home.

MasterBedroom carries products with varying price tags to help meet everyone’s budget needs, and many pieces can be customized with choices of finishes and knobs. Beds constructed of high-density board are Canadian made and come in various colours, including white, black and grey, and Mr. MacMurry says grey is a popular choice.

The Bottom Line

He advises customers to buy the best they can afford, because the furniture lasts, and “you do get what you pay for.”
